During the height of the summer tourist season, I avoid hunting on Kvarner because of the abundance of ruthless boat drivers. So for the first time I fished after the first of July. During my holiday, I took a boat trip to Cres, Lošinj and then on to Unije, where my friends were waiting for me. As they wanted a fish supper, I made a quick dive into the sea on the way. I had an hour to spare. When I wanted to mount the GoPro on the rifle, I realised that I didn’t have a plastic mount and that I wouldn’t be able to film this time. My words at the time were: ”Today I’m going to get something great, that’s what always happens when I hunt without a GoPro!”
The hunt was strange at first, because I was not in my old hunting rhythm. I hadn’t fished for over a month and a half, I had a new boat, a new barcarolle, and I didn’t know the location, because it was my first time fishing in this area. I chose the terrain by feeling.

As I was expecting a bigger group of friends at the Unions, I set out to catch something big. That’s why I chose the H2O Invert 115 for the hunt.
As always, I did one warm-up dive first. I dived about 10 metres from the anchor, as there are usually no fish that close. When I reached the bottom at 15 metres depth, a school of toothfish appeared in front of me. I immediately had contractions, and the toothfish were approaching too slowly. I probably could have launched at one of the smallest in the flock, but I didn’t want to. I had to surface, as I was not prepared to extend the dive in the first dive. The dive time was one minute and 26 seconds. I was visibly tired with such an easy dive. Then I took a good breath and dived again a few metres further. At 17 metres depth, I lay down on my chekka. The toothfish came again, but the biggest ones were even more cautious than in the previous dive. I chose a medium-sized one as a target and hit it without any problems. It was over two kilogrammes.

continued hunting, as fish were plentiful. With every dive I had a good chance of a good catch. The hunt lasted nine dives or 55 minutes. There was a +3.5kg chub in front of the arrow, which I left behind for a fishing holiday, 2 times I had toothfish out of range and then came the grand finale.

I took a deep breath in the shade behind a rock and I wanted to go to a deep couloir at -20 metres on the cogs. I looked for a strategic route where I could crawl through the shade to the overhang and have a good shelter. Just as I was about to start, I took two more breaths to optimise my preparation for the planned dive. At that moment a school of small fish ran into me. I looked up and behind the small fish were two huge identical lampreys chasing the fish. I raised my rifle from the shade where I was breathing, and when it flashed in the sun, the lampuga spotted it. It immediately took off straight at the arrowhead. When she was within one metre of the point she turned her head and I hit her on the spear at a depth of 1 cm. The hit was perfect and I immediately thought of another lamprey. This one was on the surface chasing the little fish that were jumping out of the water around me. A scene I will never forget! I was admiring the captured lamprey, which is one of the most beautiful fish, as it shows many colours. I tried to estimate its weight, but it was impossible, as its shape and size are outside the dimensions of the fish I usually catch. In the water I put it next to an arrowfish, which is 140cm long, and they were almost identical in length.
I weighed it before cleaning it and it weighed 11 kilograms. We had a superb fish feast at the Uni, and the rest of the catch provided for many picnics.
