Firstly, hey to all of you spear fishermen.

I'm new at this forum and in spear-fishing, and i would like to know anything there is to know about spear fishing.
Well, I thought i should buy a little harpoone( I'm not sure if it writes like that) that is 40 cm long and has a very thin spear, so I could start by hunting little fish ( 20 cm and so). Well, the problem occured when I pictured myself in the water with that thing and the truth is, i was kind of scared, scared that i would shoot myself and suddenly i didn't want to buy a harpoone...
I dont think you will have the answer to some of my questions, but i hope you will answer some......

1. what are the chances f a 13-year-old getting shot with a spear in the water?
2. do you have to have a license for spear fishing?
3. is it very hard to pull that elastic on to the hook?
4. do you think a 13 year old should even have a harpoon??

that's about it... i hope i will get the answer soon, because i really want to buy a harpoon, it would be so cool i know that that thing is a weapon and that i could kill myself, but i am very responsible, especially when i am in mortal peril

will try to answer your questions.

1. what are the chances f a 13-year-old getting shot with a spear in the water?
Not very likely. It can happen, of course, but you would have to be extra careless to succid in this. Greater danger is to shot someone else, your buddy, helper, supervisor or swimmer.

2. do you have to have a license for spear fishing?
Depends on the region where you spearfish. As for Croatia, answer is yes. Most other coutries also. It is not license, it is spearfishing permit.

3. is it very hard to pull that elastic on to the hook?
Depends on the speargun. Some are very heavy to load, others are quite light. The smaller the gun - easier it will be. Guns up to 90 cm shouldnt be a problem, especialy if you equip it with smaller diameter rubbers (14-16 mm). Do not use 18 or 20 mm - you will not be able to load those.

4. do you think a 13 year old should even have a harpoon??
Only under supervision if experienced spearo. Until 16 years I would say you should have tutor (mentor) who will show you how to do thing safely and will teach you about marine life and fishes.
